TL = turn left, TR = turn right, FP = footpath, KG = kissing gate, L = left, R = right, RH = right-hand, LH = left-hand

Exit the pub and TR, after 25 metres TR up the log steps opposite the village notice board following the FP sign. Over the stile at the end, ditch on right, go slightly left across field aiming for the metal gate. Through a small wooden gate and ahead, over a stile, then immediately with CARE cross the road (slightly left) to Old Back Lane FP, through a KG and ½ L across the field.

Through next KG and keep same direction, then through another KG, and straight ahead across a long wide field in direction of waymarker with Foxcote Wood away on L. At bottom of field, cross a plank bridge with stile, then ½ R up field to far RH corner, over stile and ahead with hedgerow on R. Over stile at RH of gate, ahead towards L corner of field with hedge on L, passing farm barn on L.

At the field corner go over stile to road, TL on grass verge then tarmac path, continue through Maids Moreton for 750m following the “Through Traffic” sign. Opposite the Buckingham Rugby Union Football Club cross the road with CARE.

Continue ahead in same direction. 10 metres after the bus stop sign, TR into lane and ahead for 540m passing club’s pitches with two masts on R. Where the lane bends right take the Public Bridleway on the L, ahead through field on stone surface with hedge on L. Go through RH metal gate with faded white disc, ahead with hedge on L. At the end of the narrow tip of the field, through a wooden gate with concrete bridge, ahead across field under electricity lines aiming L of a group of three trees. At field edge TL and follow lane around to R to Chackmore. Cross the road with CARE and TL passing the Queens Head public house on right.

Q2. What name is on the pub’s porch outside lantern?


Follow the road with oak-leaf sign around to the right. At the Give-Way sign TR up the avenue toward the large cream coloured Corinthian Arch. 20 metres before the arch TL on the single track road, follow the FP sign “New Park & Home Farm” through a metal gate. Continue ahead on the wide grass verge passing the lake in the dip, then further on pass between a matching pair of temples on either side of the road. Beware of traffic on this section. Continue ahead on Public Footpath passing the security hut on right (give a wave), then Stowe School and later the Shop with picnic benches (ice creams if open).

At the cream coloured rotunda temple on right continue ahead on rough track. At the Obelisk finger post, turn left along the track and continue to the Obelisk (good place for a sandwich stop).

Q3. What is the Major General’s name on the Obelisk?


Retrace your steps back to the finger post and TL, continue along grass track. At double metal gate with “crash-barrier” paddock TR to later reach a concrete hard-standing.

TL and go through the gap at side of gate, TR along road with CARE, after 50 metres cross road and go through small wooden gate and continue along bridleway through edge of (bluebell) woods for 1.9km. Later path becomes tarmac track. At road T-junction TL over stile at FP sign (slightly hidden behind foliage). Ahead across field, then over stile and ½ R across field to rear of last house, cross plank bridge with stile, ½ R across field, over stile to road. Cross the road with CARE and TL,

Just pass the bus stop go over the stile at the FP sign, go around the back of the bus stop, through a zigzag, then over stile, large stinging nettles may need trampling down here, down LH side of field and retrace route back to pub.
