Braunston lies
within the ancient royal forest of Leighfield close to the Leicestershire border. The walk
starts from an 18th century coaching inn that provides accommodation & superb meals
all day
The Walk: - Exit the pub, turn left (TL) along Church St. At grass triangle, cross road
& follow the public footpath through churchyard.
Q1 What is the name and date on the wire mesh door into the church?
At end of the path go over stile & slightly L across field going through gap in
new fence. Over another stile & ½ L across field almost to far LH corner. Go through
gap, with Open Access waymarker, and cross wide bridge onto the Open Access path. Ahead
through field to go through a small wooden gate & TL to go along edge of the field. At
corner of field turn right (TR) & continue up edge of field, with hedge on left,
ignore side turning across bridge. Cross plank bridge and go through gap in hedge and
continue up hill again with hedge on left.
At the top of the field with hedge in front of you TR and continue upwards. At the
waymarker (WM) post TL over the plank bridge and then slightly right. At the WM go through
the gap in hedge and cross plank bridge into tree plantation, follow path through
plantation and field. At WM go through gap in the hedge and follow path diagonally left
across field to far left hand corner, go through gate in hedge cross plank bridge and TR
on broad green walk.
Continue ahead ignoring turn to left and 2nd left turn with finger-post. At end of green
lane TL & after 40 metres TR through small 5-bar wooden gate onto wide bridleway (no
sign until end). At end of bridleway go through metal gate & TR in direction of WM.
Follow bridleway to road and just before road go over stile on left onto public footpath
with Rutland County Council yellow arrow on green sign. Cross field to wooden fence &
yellow WM in hedge opposite. Cross stile go straight ahead through field to gate on
opposite side and yellow WM. Cross stile to road & TR, follow road to T-junction.
Q2 At road sign at junction what is distance to Tilton?
Cross road WITH CARE and go through wooden gate onto bridleway in direction of finger
post. Go down field with hedge on left go through metal gate on left and ½ R across field
to next gate with yellow WM. Go through gate and continue through three fields in
direction of WM keeping hedge on right. (At the end of the 2nd field ignore turn to left).
Go through gate and continue on bridleway in direction of WM keeping wire fence on left.
Go through metal gate and slightly left across field in direction of WM to wooden gate.
Through gate and ahead into next field heading for left hand corner, keep hedge on left.
Go through gate continue ahead in direction of WM, ignore gap on right. Keep hedge on
right and go to far right hand corner of field & through wooden gate, straight ahead
down field aiming for large tree in small valley in front. Go across wooden bridge,
through metal gate in front & ahead along bridleway between hedges to gate & road.
Cross road WITH CARE to go through gate opposite. Cross field going diagonally right in
direction of WM to far right hand corner of field. Through gate and into field &
continue ahead with hedge on left, through gap in hedge and continue through next field
again with hedge on left. Go through gate and continue in direction of WM on bridleway. Go
through further gate and continue on bridleway until reaching fence, go through gate in
front, adjacent to large oak tree.
Go through gap with yellow WM (no gate) on RH side. (Do not continue ahead on bridleway)
go straight across field keeping hedge on right to gate. Through gate and ahead through
next field in direction of WM, heading very slightly right to go through gate on right
with yellow WM (about ¾ of the way along field). Ahead along bridleway in direction of
WM. Go through gate at end of bridleway and TL onto lane. Continue to T-junction with
surfaced lane, TR and follow lane to road.
Q3 - What is the house number on left at junction of road & lane?
Cross the road WITH CARE and TL back to the Old Plough.
