This charming walk starts at the Stags Head Public House at Maidwell (A508 south of Market Harborough). The route takes you on picturesque countryside tracks and bridleways across the Maidwell Dales, and on part of the Brampton Valley Way (a 13 mile linear walk on the disused railway line from Market Harborough to near Northampton). Then across fields and back through the village of Maidwell, with very little road walking. There are 2 questions to answer.
The Walk:-
(R= Right, L= Left, R/H= Right Hand, L/H= Left Hand)
Exit the pub & turn R, continue to the first road junction and turn R, ignore footpath/ small lane on your R, take the footpath up the drive to Elms Cottage. At start of stone wall turn R and immediately L, stone wall on L, go through gate [Please Close the Gate], and ahead in front of house to 2nd gate.
Through gate into field and ahead to stile, over this & ahead going slightly L to reach stile at L of five bar gate. Into next field and ahead with fence on your R. Continue to end, go over footbridge & ahead through trees to tarmac road. Turn R & take bridleway at side of wooden gate towards Dale Farm (private road).
Bear R just before farm then R onto footpath/ bridleway to the left of Stone Barn House, ahead with fences on your L & R to end. Turn L & continue ahead up field with hedge on your L.
Ignore footpath off to your L, continue round field passing farm on your L. Ahead going through gap in hedge, turn L & on with hedge on L, at end turn R & on with hedge on L.
Half way along field go through gap in hedge & continue in same direction, now with hedge on your R. Go through large gap & on with hedge on L. (Bridleway to Lamport). Continue with hedge on L until you reach a gap, go through & aim for large oak trees in front of you.
Q1:- What is the date on the Hawk & Owl Trust sign attached to the large oak tree?
Continue on with hedge on L, going through all gaps till you reach farm buildings. Just before buildings turn L then turn with black barn on your L to farm road. Turn R & almost immediately turn L past small barn on your R. Continue around field with hedge on your R. Go through first gap on your R, then turn L & on with hedge on L to next gap, turn L & on with hedge on L, go through gateway & on keeping hedge on L. Keep on this bridleway for the next three fields.
At end of third field go through five bar wooden gate & on with trees on L. Cross bridge and on to next gate, through gate onto track, turn L. (you are now walking part of the Brampton Valley Way).
Q2:- If you were to turn R where would it take you to?
Keep on this track crossing the main road WITH CARE. Continue until you reach a Victorian iron bridge. Cross the stile on your L (near bridge steps). Across field, over footbridge with stile into field. Continue up the field with hedge on R , through gap, over stream & ahead to R/H comer, through gate onto track to road.Turn L passing church on your L. Meander your way through Maidwell. At the main road turn R, & ahead to pub on L for some refreshment.
