Welham lies four miles northeast of Market Harborough on the north side of the River Welland that divides Leicestershire from Northamptonshire. Welham is steeped in history and character, it's charming ambience is only bettered by the gentle motions of it's hills and dales.

The Walk: -

From the Red Lion car park turn right (TR) along the path and further on the grass verge, passing a set of ornate wrought iron gates, then follow the road signposted “The Langtons 1¼ miles”. Follow the road around to the Yellow Marker Post (YMP) and through the 2 metal gates to follow the public bridleway signposted “Stonton Wyville 2 miles”.

Continue up the hill at a leisurely pace to the next YMP and through the gate. Continue gently upwards through quite a few gates (please close them) following the YMPs, beware of the rabbit holes. At the top of the highest ridge you will see a white concrete trig point on your left.

1) What is written on top of the trig point?

Return onto the path and at the end of the field turn left (TL) through the gate and follow the YMPs. At the stony lane TR and down to the road, cross the road and ahead into Stonton Wyville. Follow the road around with “Unsuitable for Motors” passing The Cottage on your right and large farm building on your left and then ahead following “Leicestershire Round footpath to Glooston 1 mile”, continue to follow the YMPs. Later, go across a plank bridge and over the adjoining stile then across the field towards the farm buildings in the distance. Follow the YMPs into Glooston.

2)    What is the name of the inn on your right?

Continue ahead passing a red telephone box then at the “Corner Cottage” take the road signposted “Cranoe 1 mile”. Strolling ahead along this quiet country road, taking care on the corner, to pass Cranoe church on your right which is hidden by high trees, an ideal place to stop for a break.

Continue ahead to the crossroads, cross WITH CARE and take the road signposted “Welham 1¾ miles”. As you saunter along this single-track road, let your mind wander to the Roman road that once traversed left to right, and in more recent times the railway line on the left. Continue on this peaceful country lane a part of the Mid-Shires Way and back to Welham.

This is the end of your walk. We hope you enjoyed it!

The Old Red Lion provides an exciting restaurant style menu at pub prices, and highly recommended especially if you have used the pub’s car park.
